About
Chris
Dr. Christopher Hammerly is a UBC professor who received his PhD in linguistics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in September 2020. He is a descendent of the White Earth Nation in Minnesota, and his research focuses primarily on his ancestral language: Ojibwe. He is passionate about applying methods and tools from a variety of fields, including linguistics, psychology, and computer science, to understand what it means to “know” a language. These findings can be applied to further revitalization efforts. His work as Lead Linguist at CultureFoundry is a continuation of this wider research program, where he is part of the team building the first text-to-speech system for the Ojibwe language.
